The film is in its second weekend in Mexico, and in a surprising turn has gone up 12%. Coco brought in 9.4 million in its opening frame, and in its second week increased that and brought in 10.4 million. In 10 days Coco has already raked in $27.6 million, which is more than any other animated film at that stage in Mexico.

This can only be seen as a victory, especially for co-director Lee Unkrich. Unkrich also helmed the current record holder for an animated film in Mexico, 2010’s Toy Story 3, which brought in $59.4 million. Coco still has a way to go to hit that number, but an uptick in its second week is a good sign.

The idea for Coco originated 6 years ago, and Unkrich says the team didn’t waste any time getting started.

“John Lassetter likes his directors to pitch three different ideas for their next project,” Unkrich told ComicBook.com. “When [Head of Story] Jason Katz and I pitched the three ideas to John, the Dia de los Muertos idea was the one he went for. We immediately got on a plane and went to Mexico and started doing research. We developed a story and spent about a year on it before we ripped it apart completely and started over again. Ultimately we found our way towards this story.”

Aside from how attached you get after working on a project for so long, Unkrich holds a more personal affection for the project.

“It made me think about my own family. It raised some urgency for me to sit my parents down and tell me stories about the family members that I never knew,” Unkrich said. “I can see myself celebrating Dia de los Muertos for years to come. It’s such a beautiful holiday.”

Coco currently holds a 2.54 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings, which you can vote on here.

Coco hits theaters on November 22.
