After a long wait, Attack on Titan dropped its 99th chapter this week, and the release did live up to fans’ expectations. The update saw Eren Jaeger and Reiner Braun come face-to-face after several years, but the encounter wasn’t the chapter’s most shocking part.

No, that award goes to the bombshell revelation Willy gave about Marley and its true hero.

If you are familiar with the history of Marley, then you will know the country is one of Attack on Titan‘s main ones. The nation was a powerful one once ruled by its own people, but the Eldian Empire took over the entire country once the Fritz family used its special Titan gifts to overrule the natives of Marley.

After the Eldians rose to power, Marley’s survivors rose up and started the Great Titan War to reclaim its home. The natives were able to capture 7 out of the 9 Titan powers which Eldia possessed with the Tybur family’s help. Marley was then reclaimed by its people, but history says King Fritz ran to Paradis to stake his claim. The royal used his Founding Titan to create the walls of his city to protect Eldia’s remaining territory, and King Fritz said any attempt to breach the Walls would be seen as an act of war. The king promised to use the Founding Titan against Marley if pushed, so the countries had a tentative truce that ended the Great Titan War.

However, Attack on Titan just proved that is not all true.

The Truth Comes Out?

The manga’s latest chapter meets up with Eren and Reiner as they meet below one of Marley’s internment camps for the Eldians. The pair listen as Willy hosts a play which reveals the country’s secret history. In a shocking revelation, the official said it was not a war hero named Helo or the Tybur family who ended the war; It was actually King Fritz.

“To be precise, it was Karl Fritz, the 145th King, who lamented the cruel history of the Eldian Empire before he inherited the Founding Titan. He was tired of hideous infighting between the same race. Most of all, he took pity on Marley, the kingdom that was abused by Eldia for so long. He aligned himself with the Tybur family upon inherited the Founding Titan, and sacrificedย himself to end the history of the Eldian Empire,” Willy explains.

“King Fritz and the Tybur familyย set up a ploy by inventing a Marleyan hero. This invention was Helos. When the Eldian Empire collapsed from Civil War, just as we’d planned, he moved as many Eldians as he could to Paradis Island sealed off the gates of the walls. He left a message that he would retaliate with thousands of titans if his peace was disturbed, but this was never his true intention. Karl Fritz made a vow of pacifism.”

Eren Is In Hot Water

As Willy explains. the two countries kept their agreement in check through the Founding Titan. The Fritz family would pass it down through its own bloodline over the years. The camp was shocked to learn about this secret history, leaving many to wonder why they have always been so fearful of Paradis. However, Willy takes the opening to vilify the island because of Eren.

“King Fritz’s wish for peace was destroyed by the recent coup that took place within Paradis Island. Someone has taken away the Founding Titan,” the man says, referring to Eren and his Titan Shifting skills.

“The world is facing crisis once again. A person who resists King Fritz’s peaceful world has appeared. The name of the rebel who opposes our march towards peace is Eren Jaeger!”

With his name made public, Eren has been made the enemy of Marley, and fans have been left mind-boggled by the reveal. For so long, the manga has stressed that Marley is the country who likes to play aggressively, but Paradis’ coup has turned the tables on Eren. The people of Marley believe their livelihood is threatened by Eren now, but it doesn’t look like the Titan Shifter is too surprised by the revelation. Marley would want to paint him in a bad light to get the Founding Titan power back, and fans would not put it behind Willy and the Tybur family to make up some false history to see their plans through.
