As Boruto: Naruto Next Generations moves forward, fans are expecting the new anime to make some clever nods to its past. After all, the series does act as a sequel to Naruto Shippuden, making it another sought after piece of Masashi Kishimoto’s story. The anime had its debut earlier this month, and fans have so far lavished Boruto with kind reviews – and the praise just keeps coming.

With so much to live up to, Boruto will be pressed to set up its own identity as a show whilst nodding to its predecessors. Aside from the show’s use of legacy heroes like Naruto and Shikamaru, Boruto is also slipping in a slew of subtle references to Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. And, in the preview for the show’s second episode, fans noticed a throwback to a classic Sasuke v Kakashi moment.
In the preview, fans can watch as Boruto faces off against a fellow Academy student in a training match. During the skirmish, Boruto gets his ankle caught by his opponent, so he twists his body to hopefully land a punch. However, the move fails as the other student catches both offensives.
If you thought the move looked familiar, then that is because Sasuke used the move on Kakashi during their Genin Exam. When the Uchiha fought against Kakashi one-on-one for the first time, the Jounin forced Sasuke to contort as such.
So far, fans are loving the nod, and the throwback does hint at Boruto’s future with Sasuke. In Boruto: Naruto The Movie, Sasuke winds up becoming a teacher to Boruto, and the younger ninja decides he wants to be a cool ninja like the Uchiha. Seeing Boruto adopt Sasuke’s fight style before he has met the older ninja in the Boruto anime is interesting to see, and it sheds light on the fighting style the boy may come to adopt.
