The live-action Tokyo Ghoul movie that debuted in Japan back in July is making its way to US theaters this fall in English sub format – and you can watch the atmospheric new teaser trailer above!

The trailer won’t fully explain the concepts and characters behind Tokyo Ghoul to anyone who isn’t familiar with Sui Ishida’s Manga or Studio Pierrot’s anime series – but it successfully lays out some haunting visuals that will probably lure newcomers into want to know more!

Like the source material, the film follows Ken Kaneki (Masataka Kubota) who goes out for a date with girl, and winds up needing life-saving surgery when she tries to devour him. That procedure changes Kaneki into a “half-ghoul,” i.e. a human who is given the organs of a ghoul and becomes a powerful hybrid. However, the half-ghoul existence also comes with a steep price: one must consume human flesh, or die of an unimaginably painful starvation.

Ken must quickly learn all about the would ghouls hiding in human society, as well as how to balance his violent hunger with the need to keep his ghoulish side a secret – lest he become a target of the various human agencies commissioned to hunt and kill ghouls all over the world.

While the Tokyo Ghoul movie only received lukewarm praise when released in Japan this summer, it was still hailed as a good enough anime adaptation that plans for a sequel film are moving forward.

Tokyo Ghoul live-action movie sub version will be released in a limited theatrical run October 16 – 22nd. Check your local theaters for show times and locations.
