RED 2

will be released on July 19, rather than August 2 as previously scheduled, Summit Entertainment announced today. The move pits the comic book-derived action-comedy against R.I.P.D., the supernatural police drama based on the Dark Horse Comics. The August 2 date would have seen the movie conflicting with 2 Guns, The Spectacular Now and 300: Rise of an Empire, although there have been reports that the 300 sequel would vacate the date. It will also be the opening weekend for The Smurfs 2, which debuts on Wednesday, July 31. RED 2, R.I.P.D., 2 Guns and 300: Rise of an Empire are all based on comic book properties, with Frank Miller contributing to the script of the 300 sequel via a graphic novel that's not yet been published.
