The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is proving to be a difficult movie for box office analyst to call. At first, it was projected to possibly have the top opening weekend of 2013 so far, but now it looks like it won’t come close to Iron Man 3’s $174.1 million opening weekend, which was boosted by 3D ticket sales. However, The Hunger Games Catching Fire still appears to be on track to set an opening weekend record for the month of November. The opening day total for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has now been called at $70.5 million. The opening day numbers include both Friday and Thursday night showings. Even though the $70.5 million tops the $67.3 million opening day of the original Hunger Games movie, many have been quick to point out that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire benefited from an 8 PM early showing on Thursday night, which the first Hunger Games did not have. Most are now projecting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to finish the weekend in the low to mid-$140 million range, which would be below the original Hunger Games opening weekend of $152.2 million.
