Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Yesterday, when he suggested that the Arrow panel was “just the tip of the iceberg” for his Comic Con International: San Diego plans later this month, Amell was apparently inundated with speculation by fans and reporters that the additional appearances he has lined up will be to announce that Arrow will share a universe with Batman V Superman.

At the time we noted that the idea that he’s got at least three more items on his schedule would no doubt send many fans into a tizzy over whether he might be joining panels for other Warner Bros. TV shows (like The Flash and Constantine) or even movies, intimating a connected universe between the Arrowverse and the DC Cinematic Universe.

“I appreciate all the support and enthusiasm, but not everything I post is a cryptic indicator that I’m going to be in Batman V Superman,” Amell told his Facebook followers today. “I’m not going to be in Batman V Superman.”

It’s likely no surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention that “What about Justice League?” was a common response.

“The next time that I either do a video or an interview with a journalist that I like, I’ll be happy to explain why this is the case,” Amell promised. “Short form – it’s not a barometer on ability or the quality of genre – TV V Film, no pun intended. Everything here boils down to logistics. In any event… thank you for how much support you’ve showed me. But keep in mind, playing Arrow on television isn’t a consolation prize. We play the definitive versions of our characters in the DC Universe.”

Amell and those involved with Arrow and The Flash have been resistant to saying one way or another whether the shows are, or at least could be, part of the world of the DC Cinematic Universe. Amell himself has said repeatedly that he would like to be.

Arrow Executive Producers and writers Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti worked on the Green Lantern movie and, due to their strong relationship with Warners, may serve a similar role on future Justice League films.

Whenever Amell makes any kind of remark at all about TV/movie synergy, it tends to get picked up by the press and run with. Now, it seems even comments that are not explicitly about the subject are getting similar scrutiny.

“You know I’m going to be at San Diego Comic-Con International this year, but you have no idea what I’m going to be doing,” Amell wrote to his Facebook wall yesterday to start all of this. “The Arrow panel on Friday evening is the literal tip of the iceberg. Feel free to speculate. There are (at least) 3 more things on my schedule. Big things. Needless to say, I plan on winning Comic-Con this year.”

Amell could very well, like fellow cult TV personality Zachary Levi, be rolling out his own content separate from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment; his charitable work and his winery both indicate that he’s not content to be just a guy showing off his abs on TV.

The Arrow panel itself is likely to be an exciting affair; Katana was just recently announced as joining the cast, and it seems likely Ted Kord/Blue Beetle will be announced sometime between now and the show.

Arrow returns to the air on October 8 at 8 p.m. on The CW. Comic Con International: San Diego runs from July 23-27.
