Willis will play Paul Sheldon (played on film by James Caan), who is a romance novelist that was injured in a car accident during a blizzard. Unluckily, he is rescued by Annie Wilkes, who will be played by House Of Cards actress Elizabeth Marvel. Wilkes, professes to be Paul’s “Number One Fan,” and is more than happy to use her background in nursing to help Paul recuperate from his vast injuries. Things take a turn for the worse when Annie becomes unhinged after learning that Paul has killed off her favorite fictional character Misery Chastain.
The play was written by two-time Academy Award winner William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who also wrote the screenplay for the 1990 Rob Reiner film that starred Kathy Bates in her Oscar-winning turn as Annie Wilkes. – THR
Broadway’s Misery will be directed by Will Frears (Omnium Gatherum) and is scheduled for a limited run in the fall at a theater to be announced.
