While Lawrence’s X-Men contract is still in effect and Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy deal is really just getting started, it’s expected that this could be a new franchise for the two superstars.
Pratt, of course, is also starring in Jurassic World and will reprise his role as Emmett in a second LEGO Movie. Lawrence’s blockbuster Hunger Games franchise is now in post-production on its final installment, meaning that it’s all over but the promotional appearances at this point for the actress.
Jon Spaihts, writer of Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange, is penning the script. Sony bought rights to Passengers in December after it had passed through a number of hands.
At various points, Keanu Reeves, Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams were attached to the film, according to Variety.
Passengers is set on a spacecraft in the future, with thousands of passengers making an interstellar voyage to a distant new planet. One passenger awakens from cryogenic sleep 90 years before anyone else and decides to wake up a female passenger, sparking the beginning of a love story.
Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy ended the year as the top-grossing film of 2014 at the domestic box office. In late January, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part One passed it to become the top-grossing movie released in 2014.
The Wrap first reported Pratt’s involvement.
