creator and former showrunner Dan Harmon is reported to have been asked back to the series for its upcoming fifth (and final?) season on NBC.The writer/producer, whose Rick and Morty was just ordered to series on Adult Swim, told the audience at his live Harmontown podcast last night that he was in talks to return, although it’s unclear whether Sony Television or NBC would be the ones asking him back–and whether whichever one spearheaded the idea could get the other behind it.”Dan Harmon just told the audience of his podcast Harmontown that he has been asked to return to Community!” reported Hollywookiee. “As soon as Dan said it, he asked that it be edited out of the podcast and it was just for us audience members(and I wasn’t going to say a word) but soon after that Dan said ‘Ahhh F–k it. I don’t care who knows!’ He jokingly said that he would only return if they brought Chevy Chase back too but even he couldn’t stop laughing at that idea.”The episode of the podcast recorded last night is not yet available for download, making it difficult to know for sure whether Harmon was joking all the way through or just about the Chevy Chase bit. The producer and former series star Chase had a notoriously contentious relationship, and rumors have circulated since he was fired that part of the consideration for getting rid of Harmon was to keep the comedy icon happy, after Chase left Harmon some expletive-filled voicemail messages that were extremely critical of Community, and the former showrunner played them for an audience at a stand-up comedy gig. After Harmon left, Chase’s displeasure with the character he was playing reportedly continued, leading him to walk off the show with an episode left to film. The show was recently renewed for a fifth season, but it’s unclear whether they will replace Chase’s character, who graduated from Greendale and is no longer a key part of the ensemble going forward, or whether they will simply lean more heavily on Ken Jeong’s Chang, who “officially” joined the study group at the end of season four.
