Supergirl Legion 18

With “Rebirth” coming and DC Comics apparently planning on relaunching and refocusing all, or at least a number of, its titles this summer, we’ve come to wonder: Could we be seeing a Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes title coming from DC?

We admittedly don’t have a ton to base it on, but there’s a fair amount of circumstantial evidence to suggest that this is a plausible idea:

Earlier this month, Supergirl and The Flash EP and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns hinted that the Legion of Super-Heroes appearing on one of the TV shows he oversees.

A lot of fans assumed that would be DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which launched last week and which boasts time travel as a staple of the show — but then there were comments that the show wouldn’t travel past 2166.

While technically the Legion could come back from the future to 2166 or earlier, the reality is almost any version of the 31st Century the Legion might come from, would make Vandal Savage not all of history’s worst threat, as he’s so far been characterized, but a bump in the historical road.

Besides that, of all of the characters currently on TV, Supergirl is far and away the one with the most ties to the Legion…including having co-headlined a comic with the team for a time.

if the Legion gets a nod in Supergirl, then a Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes comic would line up with rumors that DC’s planned realignment will skew heavily toward titles that reflect their film and TV slate.

Meanwhile, let’s take a look at the solicitation for April’s Action Comics #51:

Superman is shocked to learn that Kara has been missing for some time as part three of “Super League” begins! Now, with Batman’s help, Kal-El is on his cousin’s trail—but he can’t believe where it’s leading him and who she has joined!

…Well, that seems like a bit of a giveaway, doesn’t it?

If it’s true that they’re relaunching in July, shortly after the #52 issues of most major DC titles, that suggests any big twists coming up in #51 would likely set the stage for the rebooted titles, right? So…why not Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes? We’ve already seen her as a Red Lantern; it’s hard to imagine who would be an odder, more surprising fit for her to “join,” unless she was going to do the time-travel thing.

Meanwhile, of course, the Legion of Super-Heroes have been off the table for a while. They haven’t had their own ongoing since the launch of the New 52, and when they did appear in the post-Flashpoint Universe, it was in Justice League United — a title that also starred Supergirl.
