The Suicide Squad train keeps on rolling this week as we get more and more information about the movie in their latest interview with Empire magazine. Outside of the collection of covers, and quotes from the cast, the magazine was able to talk to EP Charles Roven and director David Ayer about the hotly anticipated 2016 film.

The fact that we’re even getting a Suicide Squad movie was a surprise to many, including Roven.
“We’d just started shooting Batman v Superman, we were figuring out our path through the expanding DC Justice League universe,” Roven said. He continued with “Then David Ayer came and pitched his take on Suicide Squad. It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we’re trying to do with these movies. And it’s impossible that you could get a big tentpole picture from pitch to start of principal photography and faster than we did.”
But Ayer knew what he had was special and different than what the current landscape of superhero films. He knew that there was another formula he could put into play and hopefully be successful.
“You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from f*cking Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the f*ck cares?” Ayer claimed. “But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been sh*t on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad… I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0”
The idea of Suicide Squad being a “Comic Book Movie 2.0” certainly is an interesting notion. Considering we’re also seeing our first rated R superhero film in a while with Deadpool, could these movies be what we need to move past the villain of the week formula other movies have been following? With a cast like Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevigne, Viola Davis, Will Smith & more, Suicide Squad surely has the star power to do so.
