The Purge: Anarchy came in at #2, making it the highest-grossing new release of the weekend, with $28 million. Planes: Fire and Rescue from Disney animation (operating without Pixar, as they did in the first Planes) made around $18 million. Each of those were sequels that fell short of the opening weekend marks their predecessors set; Planes made around $22 million when it opened while The Purge generated $34 million.
Disney admitted that the opening weekend for Planes: Fire and Rescue was a bit less than they had hoped, but it was inexpensive to make and they’re making a ton of money on toys and ancillary merchandise, so the franchise — which has at least one more installment planned — remains in fairly solid shape.
Sex Tape generated just $15 million and is expected to peter out and ultimately be a failure for Sony; Transformers: Age of Extinctionrounded out the top five this weekend with just under $10 million, bringing the movie’s domestic total to just over $225 million.
