Deadpool Trailer: Reaction And Analysis

Deadpool kept us up all night last night. We were picking apart the trailer, as many of you were, compiling our favorite lines and images, all the while lusting over that costume.

Let’s calm down now, though, and take an in-depth look at the trailer.

Deadpool & Weapon X

The suit looks spot on accurate to the comic book version of Deadpool, but what about his story? In the comics, Deadpool was treated for cancer, much like we see in the trailer, and ultimately turned into the world’s favorite sarcastic mercenary when he undergoes the treatment. Reynolds confirmed on Conan that it will be the same Weapon X treatment we saw Wolverine go through in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

“Please Don’t Make The Super Suit Green”

When Wade Wilson delivers this line before his treatment, it’s in reference to Ryan Reynolds’ performance as Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern film. The suit was green…and animated. It’s clear Reynolds doesn’t have much love for the film (and neither do many fans), so the laughable jab was all in good fun.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Negasonic Teenage Warhead doesn’t say her name in this cut of the trailer, but Brianna Hildebrand portrays the character whose name impresses Deadpool. What are her powers? Telepathy and seeing the future. Usually, she sees disasters which tends to keep her in a pretty bad mood.

Colossus

Andre Tricoteux plays Colossus this time around and there’s no telling which timeline he’s from in Fox’s Marvel Universe. Following Days of Future Past, he could be the Peter Rasputin we saw in the flash forward, he could be from an alternate timeline, or he could be the grown up version from the First Class and Apocalypse timelines. Damn you, Time Travel.

Fabian Niciez

As a nod to Deadpool’s co-creator, Fabian Niciez, some street signs are labeled “Fabian Rd” and “Niciez St” in the background of a scene featured in the trailer.

Rob Liefeld & Stan Lee

Although their cameos were cut for the released version of the trailer, at Comic Con, viewers got to see Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld pass by on screen and Marvel mastermind Stan Lee introduce a stripper. Fun fact: Liefeld first created Deadpool in 1991, debuting him in New Mutants #98.

With Great Power

Deadpool spewed it’s tone all over the famous Spider-Man line, “With great power comes great responsibility,” by reworking it to “With great power comes great irresponsibility.”

Deadpool is the first comic book movie of 2016, and the first in line after this Friday’s Fantastic Four release. Deadpool hits theaters February 12, 2016. Check out ComicBook.com’s comic book movie release schedule.
