Ghost Rider will be ripping and roaring onto the scene in his supped up hell car on this fourth season of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While this version will be the most recent iteration of the character, Robbie Reyes, the question arises if this is the only Spirit of Vengeance that we’ll be seeing. Comicbook.com Fan, Johnny Blazed, believes that Reyes will just be the opening salvo on the spirits of vengeance we see racing onto television screens this fall, with Johnny Blaze trailing swiftly behind him. Are the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. prepared for more than one Ghost Rider to hit the scene? Let’s look at the facts!

The character of the Ghost Rider is similar to that of Green Lantern, with many characters sharing the mantle. Robbie Reyes is only the most recent of the supernatural super heroes to don the identity with the likes of Danny Ketch, Alejandra, and Johnny Blaze blazing the path before him. While each Ghost Rider has had differing appearances and abilities, their core modus operandi has changed over time. While Robbie uses the power to protect his neighborhood and his brother, Johnny Blaze would use it in an attempt to get revenge against Mephisto or other super natural beings of his ilk that dared to attack him.

In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., introducing the recent Ghost Rider without giving him the legacy storyline that ties into his origin would seem almost alien. The Spirit of Vengeance may be its own entity, but honoring the past and bringing to light previous incarnations was always a big part of the “Midnight Son’s” background. In Robbie Reyes’ first storyline, Johnny Blaze appeared to get to the bottom of the origin of Reyes’ powers and assist in training him how best to deal with them and the curse. Reyes in the upcoming series will need a mentor as most of the Agents aren’t particularly familiar with the world of the supernatural, rather simply the extraterrestrial.

While all signs would point to Johnny Blaze being the Ghost Rider to appear alongside Reyes, introducing Alejandra as a more villainous take on the character to compete with Robbie would also work. Danny Ketch, the second Ghost Rider, would also work as a beaten down advisor to Reyes as well if the series wanted to distinguish itself from the Nicholas Cage movies. There’s a smorgasboard of Ghost Riders to choose from! Hopefully, we’ll also be able to see some Ghost Rider villains or other supporting characters hitting the scene as well. I’d love to see the main baddie of the season be someone like Lilith or Vengeance for example to use some of their special effects budget properly.

I’m still taken aback that we’ll be getting Ghost Rider on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this fall. I got into comic books with the Danny Ketch run in the 90s and have been a fan ever since. If we’re going to have more Ghost Riders entering the fray, Norman Reedus is always available to be Johnny Blaze (If his Walking Dead schedule permits of course)
