Five Actors We Want To Play Goldar In The Power Rangers Movie

At NYCC this year, Mighty Morphin Power Ranger director Dean Israelite confirmed that Rita Repulsa’s right-hand soldier Goldar will be appearing in the movie. Surely he’ll give the Megazord a fight to its life.

A long-standing character in MMPR mythos, Goldar is seen as one of the Rangers most dangerous foes, even if he had a comical streak towards the end. The fight between the Megazord and Goldar’s own warzord, Cyclopsis, is one of the most dramatic moments of the show as Goldar finally gets the upper hand on the Rangers. His inclusion to the movie makes sense as it’s been long rumored that his wife Scorpina will be the movie’s main villain.

With Elizabeth Banks donning eerie green armor and being such a visual deviation from the original Rita/Bandora designit’ll be interesting to see how Goldar will look, but what about the actor underneath the wings and plated armor? From the trailer we’ve seen that Rita takes a more sinister turn this time around, so she will need an equally intimidating General by her side.

So we take a look at five actors that we would love to see as Goldar that would give the villainous space warrior a proper update.

Tyler Mane

This might be a case of typecasting, but it totally works here.ย

Tyler Mane, a professional wrestler turned actor, is already intimidating as is. Standing at 6′ 8″, the actor made an immediate splash after being cast as Sabretooth in Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie. From there, he took on characters such as the legendary horror icon Michael Myers and Ajax in Wolfgang Peterson’s Troy.ย

His towering height is an instantly frightening silhouette, but armored up in golden plates and wielding a massive sword probably, Mane becomes something right off a fantasy book cover. He’s proven he can be aggressive and terrorizing, and for the Rangers to get a sense of the danger they’re about to face, Mane is a perfect nomination to take up Golar’s wings and ebony…mane.ย

Roman Reigns

The WWE is always trying to transcend outside of their sphere and with them having their own production company assuredly helps them make movie stars out of their superstars. For a while now, Roman Reigns has been at the top of the WWE food chain, but what if he were to take a small break and dip his toes into the world of movies?ย

Reigns, real name Joe Anoa’i, already had the proper build for somebody like Goldar. His former Shield brothers Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins have already branched out into films, and it’s about time Roman tries the same.ย

With his polarizing reactions from the WWE Universe, it’s the perfect time for Reigns to take a sabbatical from the ring and try his hand at acting. Hey, it worked out great for his cousin, who was just recently named the Sexiest Man Alive.ย

Clive Owen

Much like Frank Langella in Masters of the Universe, Clive Owen could bring a sense of pride and gravitas to Rita’s most loyal warrior.ย

One of this generation’s most critically acclaimed actors (and who turned down the role of James Bond) Owen has a certain presence about him that demands attention from the audience. As seen in BOOM! Studio’s Pink Ranger mini-series, Goldar isn’t as dumb as the TV series made him outย to be. He’s a fierce General who commands with authority and will stop at nothing to destroy the Rangers all in the name of his Empress Rita.ย

Given the chance, an actor of Owen’s caliber could be something the movie needs in order to reach some certain level of legitimacy, especially if he’s sharing scenes with the likes of Elizabeth Banks or possibly even Bryan Cranston as Zordon pre-stasis.ย

Dolph Lundgren

Speaking of Masters of the Universe, we have He-Man himself, Dolph Lundgren.ย

Blasting on to the action movie scene in the 1980’s after being introduced in Rocky III as the notorious Ivan Drago, Lundgren quickly found himself mentioned in the same breath as Stallone, Schwartzenegger, Willis, and Norris.ย

The actor recently turned 59, but that hasn’t stopped him from acting as he’s been seen on the CW’s Arrow this year and currently has eight (yes eight!) projects for next year. Casting him as Goldar would be a smart move as he’s a known name and has a demanding voice when need be. His physical nature would be a great asset to the role and might give Goldar the proper amount of decorum he deserves.ย

Rory McCann

While Rory McCann is relatively new to the acting profession, he certainly made a name for himself as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane on HBO’s Game of Thrones.ย

McCann’s stature is imposing as is, but he’d be a downright perfect fit for Goldar. His graveled voice and dead stare could translate well with any sort of prosthetic that might be used for Goldar’s appearance. Plus, he already knows how to use a greatsword. McCann’s appearance in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers could also bring in the hardcoreย Game of Thrones fans that might otherwise avoid it.ย

Having somebody like McCann as Goldar might be a bit surprising for some, but even then it would be on par with the rest of the casting as it’s surprised even the most diehard of Ranger fans.ย

Whoever they decide to cast as the role of Goldar, he’ll have his work cut out for him, but any of these men should easily be up to the task.ย
