“The idea that, after all Jon and Sansa have been through as characters, they’re able to put a foot back on solid ground in terms of family and somebody with whom they have a bond that runs deeper than any other bond is a big moment for the two of them and for us to see it played out,” says Weiss.

They then discuss Tyrion’s attempts to broker a peace between Meereen and the cities of Slaver’s Bay, comparing Tyrion to Abraham Lincoln.

“Because Abe Lincoln was trying desperately to stave off a civil war between the North and the South, and he wasn’t ready to get rid of slavery quite as quickly as people think,” Benioff explains. “He was trying to talk to the southerners and work out some kind of compromise at first.”

Finally, they discuss the episode’s fiery final scene.

“The end of episode 604 was definitely meant to consciously echo the end of episode 110,” Weis says. “It’s Dany stepping out a flame to great effect. This time it was just a much, much larger scale.”

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
