The film, starring Scarlett Johansson, will hit theaters April 14, 2017.
Johansson signed on to the project just last week. Dreamworks had been pursuing an A-list female star to help with the film’s financing. This announcement would seem to indicate that the plan paid off.
Dreamworks’ Ghost in the Shell will be a live action adaptation of the classic 1995 anime film, which was in turn based on Masune Shirow’s cyberpunk manga about a branch of the Japanese National Public Safety Comission, Section 9, that deals with cybercrimes.
Johansson is presumed to be playing Motoko Kusanagi, or a westernized character based on Kusanagi, who leads District 9. While most members of Section 9 have some cybernetic implants, Kusanagi inhabits a completely artificial body.
