New Ghost In The Shell Image of Scarlett Johansson Sitting Upon Futuristic Motorcycle

Paramount Pictures has released (via Empire) a new high-resolution image of Scarlett Johansson as The Major, sitting upon a futuristic Honda motorcycle.

Aside from the image, Empire spoke with the 32-year-old actress about what interested her in playing a cyborg with a human soul. “She’s living a unique experience as somebody who has an idea of who she thinks she was, and then who she is now, and the person that she feels she is, this sort of gnawing feeling she has in her ghost,” she told the UK magazine. “Being able to play those three sides: the ego, the superego and the id… That was pretty enticing.”

However, one of the drawbacks to the role is that flesh-toned optical camouflage suit she had to wear — which allows her character to blend in with her surroundings and sneak up on her targets. “I don’t wear that too often, thankfully,” she shared with a sheepish grin. “It’s hot where you don’t want it to be and cold where you don’t want it to be.”

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows the Major (Scarlett Johansson), a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

The cast also includes Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Michael Pitt as Kuze, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, and Kaori Momoi. The members of Section 9 are played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo.

Snow White and the Huntsman helmer, Rupert Sanders, is directing.

Ghost in the Shell will be released in the U.S. on March 31, 2017.
