Do you want to believe? Well, you better. He might not look it, but David Duchovny is celebrating his 56th birthday today.

The New Yorker was born in August 1960 to parents Margaret and Amram. Growing up, the actor took an interest in theater and eventually wound up at Princeton University where he studied English Literature. He graduated in 1982, and a few years later, Duchovny began his acting career in full-force.

However, it was in 1993 when Duchovny got his big break by landing a role in the sci-fi show X-Files. Playing FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, Duchovny rocketed to fame as Fox’s show quickly became a cult hit. The actor, alongside co-star Gillian Anderson, went on to star in two feature-length X-Files films until he left the series in 2001.

Duchovny’s other best-known role is that of Hank Moody, a novelist in Showtime’s hit series Californication. His work on the show ultimately led Duchovny to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Comedy back in 2007.

Most recently, the actor found himself in the headlines after a X-Files continuation was announced by FOX. Premiering on January 24th, the 6-episode miniseries brought back original cast members such as Duchovny and Gillian to fans’ delight.

Despite his acting career’s success, Duchovny hasn’t forgotten his literary roots and has also enjoyed working as an author. The star wrote his first book Holy Cow: A Modern-Day Dairy Tale last year while his second publication Bucky F*cking Dent was released earlier this spring.

Happy birthday, David Duchovny!
