Earlier today some comments surfaced regarding a possible new trilogy of Harry Potter films, taking place during the era of the recently released Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play. Harry Potter creator and author J.K. Rowling decided to address those reports, and the result might disappoint a few folks.
For context, the comments originally on the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast courtesy of theme park historian and journalist Jim Hill. On the podcast he said “I have heard that Warner Bros. has actually had conversations with [Emma Watson], with Rupert [Grint], and, of course, Daniel [Radcliffe] about Cursed Child, ’cause they want this to be, for lack of a better term, Harry Potter: The Force Awakens. They want this trilogy of movies to have the actors that we know and love from the original films, that we watched grow up, as adults. And, of course, they’re hiring a bunch of new, younger actors to play their children with the hope that, “If we can lean on J.K. [Rowling], maybe there’ll be The Cursed Adolescent.”

Rowling posted a response to that report on Twitter and quickly shut it down by saying “This. Is. Not. True.” Okay, so that seems to be a nonstarter, and it appears at this time Rowling has no plans on creating a new trilogy. That said, there was a time that a series of Fantastic Beasts films weren’t in the plans either, let alone Cursed Child. As it stands, Warner Bros. and Rowling have their hands full with the numerous Fantastic Beasts sequels in development, but once those are near their conclusion, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this topic broached once more.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four Harry Potter blockbusters. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incidentโฆwere it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital storefronts now.
