To celebrate the release of Yoga Hosiers, director Kevin Smith decided to do what many filmmakers fear. The pop culture figure taped himself reacting to negative reviews of Yoga Hosiers on his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On. Joined by Ralph Garman, the two talked about their take on the new film which stars Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith.

The two begin by acknowledging the film’s sour reviews. Yoga Hosiers, the sequel to Tusk, follows two sisters who’re tasked with fighting an army of Bratzis. These mini monsters are little more than animated bratwursts sold on Nazi ideology, and their collective army hopes to enslave the world like all baddies do. Critics, however, have panned the film. Smith and Garman sourced several scathing reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, and the hosts went on to read those pieces live but not before Garman takes a much-needed shot.

Smith, who had avoided all reviews of his film, listened as Garman read the website’s general consensus for Yoga Hosiers. The description calls the horror comedy “undisciplined, unfunny, and bereft of evident purpose” before going on to say “Yoga Hosiers represents a particularly grating low-point in Kevin Smith’s once promising career.”

Hearing the sharp critique, Smith laughs, asking, “That’s the consensus? Oh, s**t.” The director eventually quiets after a few more quips and tells Garman to keep the blows coming. “I’m ready to take it like a man,” Smith says.

But, as Garman continues to read, fans can see Smith wasn’t as ready as he thought. The first review comes courtesy of Michelle Devereaux at The Skinny who writes, “Relying on a host of sub-Austin Powers gags โ€“ incessant Canada puns, tiny Nazis made from bratwurst, Johnny Depp as a French-Canadian with wandering facial moles and the voice of a muted Jerry Lewis โ€“ Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers might be appropriately described as good-natured meta-awfulness.”

Smith weighs the critics words and decides he can take it, but when Garman pulls out a review from the Wall Street Journal, the director clams up. Written by John Anderson, the top critic’s review appears to shake Smith as the duo share a long history with one another. As such, Garman decides to ease the article’s blow and reads Anderson’s words while doing an impression of Bill Cosby.

“Writer-director-comic-book-artist-cult-figure Kevin Smith’s latest exercise in questionable taste goes literally from bad to wurst,” Anderson writes, leaving Smith relieved by the soft remarks. The video shows the two as they read several other harsh reviews which Smith takes in stride. After each blow, the director stresses Yoga Hosiers is a film he made for his fans – and while some critics may hate it – he hopes the feature will excite his followers.

So far, it seems as if Smith’s hopes are coming true. Yoga Hosiers currently has an audience score of 64 percent, a much better number than the site’s critical score of 21% percent. And, what’s more, Smith has confirmed he’s shooting another film that’ll follow Yoga Hosier. Titled Moose Jaws, the new project will wrap up the director’s True North trilogy.
