Kong: Skull Island is set to return the true king of the jungle to his lofty place aside other cinematic giants, but the studio won’t be doing that with a traditional origin story.

During a recent set visit, Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts described how Skull Island will eschew some pitfalls of other prequels. Namely how some films give everything about their world away, taking away the air of mystery (via Nerdist).

“When you watch Predator 2 and you see that Xenomorph skull on the spaceship you’re like, ‘Oh my God!’” he says. “Your brain just goes crazy with all these possibilities. And my favorite thing as a kid watching movies [was] just having all these little things in the background that you pick up on and your brain just goes wild with. So we’re trying to tiptoe a line. There’s a lot of stuff out there that our movie is sort of his origin story, and that’s not really what it is. There’s a lot of background mythology peppered into it as we create our own new mythologyโ€ฆ There are not that many good prequels. As soon as you try to over-explain something it tends to lose its magic. We still want to have a wonderful sense of mystery and use it in a way to make our island, and our creature, and Kong’s character feel bigger because you understand some of it, but we’re not trying to pull back the curtain on everything.”

While there won’t be explanations for everything viewers see in Skull Island, fans can expect plenty of world building throughout the film. It just might be a bit more subtle than you’re used to.

Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacificโ€”as beautiful as it is treacherousโ€”unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston (Thor: Ragnarok), Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Oscar-winner Brie Larson (Room), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) and John C. Reilly (Guardians of the Galaxy). The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. The film is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia.

Kong: Skull Island hits theaters on March 10, 2017. Godzilla 2 is scheduled for March 22, 2018. MonsterVerse is slated for May 29, 2020.
