Warning: Potential spoilers ahead for Twin Peaks.
Dern, who also co-starred in Blue Velvet with Twin Peaks star Kyle Maclachlan, will reportedly play Diane, Agent Dale Cooper’s assistant at the FBI, to whom he spoke through his hand-held tape recorder throughout the show’s original run.
During that run, Diane was never seen. Even the notion that she was Cooper’s assitant or secretary is assumed, since while we see him greet her at the office in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Diane herself doesn’t appear.
Some fans, given the nature of the series, theorize that she doesn’t really exist, and is Cooper’s way of coping with the loss of Caroline. The canonical tie-in novel Dale Cooper My Life And Tapes, however, does identify the character as Cooper’s secretary.
Showtime has not confirmed this or any casting aside from that of Kyle Maclachlan, who will reprise his role as Cooper. A number of returning cast members have either been rumored, or have themselves confirmed their appearances in the new episodes, while newcomers like Heroes, iZombie and The Flash baddie Robert Knepper have been reported as joining the cast.
