When Hugh Jackman hit the Comic-Con International: San Diego stage, he didn’t talk much about Wolverine 3 (yes, Origins still counts whether you want it to or not, Fox and fans), but the three words he did say made Hall H (and the internet) erupt: “Old Man Logan.”

The story, originally in comic book form by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, showed an aged Logan on the road in a dystopian future where the villains won, and most heroes are dead and gone. He’s joined along the way by a blind Hawkeye, and fights the Red Skull and the Hulk in the climax.

So here’s the problem – all three of those major supporting characters are at Marvel Studios, and this new Wolverine movie is being made by Fox.

“They’re not important to the story,” Mark Millar told IGN in an interview about the film adaptation. He couldn’t flat-out say that the movie will be based on his tale, but he did mention and quote Jackman’s seeming announcement. As for how to work the story without those characters, Millar said it’s fairly easy to substitute them out.

“Basically Wolverine doing The Road movie is the important thing and he has a friend [a blind Hawkeye] with him. But that friend could be Cyclops and he could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time and everything, but still insists on driving the car they’re crossing America with. There’s lots of stuff. Instead of the Hulk, you could have the Blob or something,” Millar said.

Ultimately, the story doesn’t need the little individual details when it comes to an adaptation, the writer says. In fact, he thinks it might fit better as a film to just be in the X-Men universe. “Comic fans are different from the mainstream world. I know this stuff backwards because I’ve lived my whole life loving this stuff, but most people don’t know all the minutia and everything so I think keeping it simplified and keeping it generally X-Men universe is a smarter thing to do.”
