While so far, fans have been assured that Jason Bourne will return to the film franchise that bears his name, little has been said about just what he’ll be doing, or what Matt Damon’s character will have to do with Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross, who was at the center of The Bourne Legacy.

Well, we’re inching closer to knowing…something…as Damon himself spilled a few hints during a recent interview in support of his forthcoming release The Martian.
“[Bourne] has his memory back, but that doesn’t mean he knows everything,” Damon told the New York Daily News. “It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid. So we have to answer the questions, Where’s he been? What’s he doing? What gets him going again? So once we solved all that, then we had a movie.”
He also reiterated earlier comments that the film deals in “post-Snowden” themes, alluding to Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee, and former government contractor who leaked classified information from the U.S. National Security Agency in 2013. Snowden is a divisive figure, heralded either as a traitor or a kind of folk hero, depending on who’s answering the question. His disclosures have fueled debates over mass surveillance, government secrecy, and the balance between national security and information privacy, all issues that reonate in the Bourne universe.
