New Mad Max: Fury Road Images Released

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are headlining newly-released images of Mad Mad: Fury Road.

In the latest Mad Max installment, Tom Hardy plays Max, humanity’s only hope in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by chaos and anarchy. Joining him on his journey through Earth’s wastelands is Theron’s Imperator Furiosa, a mysterious woman who’s equally determined to save the planet.

Along with the images, which debuted in this month’s Total Film Magazine, Theron explained her character’s significance in the Mad Max universe, and how a character like Furiosa fits in the overall world.

“George [Miller, director] really wanted a woman to stand alongside Max,” Theron told the magazine, “and that was all I knew, and I just thought, ‘Whoa, for a woman to stand next to him in that world, that would be pretty fucking cool.’ He was really kind of exploring women in this world at every age and there was something, selfishly, that I thought was almost better than Max. It’s very hard for a woman to feel that way when she steps into a world like that.”

Mad Max: Fury Road hits theaters on May 15.
