With Pokemon GO inching towards release, Nintendo has finally spilled the beans on how players will play the highly anticipated mobile game set in the real world. Per new information on Pokemon’s website, Pokemon GO will allow trainers to catch Pokemon as they travel through their own town. While trainers will initially only have access to “basic” Pokemon, trainers can level up by catching Pokemon and battling, which in turn will grant players access to more Pokemon and better equipment (like better Poke Balls).Pokemon GO players can re-stock on supplies like Poke Balls as special “Poke Stops” set up at special points of interest (like monuments or pieces of public art) as well as find Poke Eggs.Certain types of Pokemon, such as Water types, will only appear in certain geographic locations to encourage players to explore their surroundings.Pokemon GO will handle evolution a bit differently than normal Pokemon games.Trainers will be able to evolve their Pokemon after capturing the same type of Pokemon multiple times, and it’s unclear if you’ll be able to level up your Pokemon within the game.

Similar to Niantic’s other game Ingress, Pokemon GO will divide players into three teams who will battle for control of gyms set up throughout cities.Trainers can leave one Pokemon at each gym their team controls, so teams are encouraged to work together to build a strong defense for when rival teams arrive to battle for control of the base.Like Ingress, players can also earn medals for completing certain tasks, reaching certain destinations or capturing certain types of Pokemon in order.

Nintendo also confirmed that the Pokemon GO Plus device will allow fans to play the game even when the app isn’t in active use.The Pokemon GO Plus will connect to your phone via Bluetooth and will alert trainers to when a Pokemon is nearby, so they can catch the Pokemon using a button on the device.

Pokemon GO will be free to download and play, although the game will have unspecified in-app purchase options. No release date has been given yet, but Nintendo confirmed that a closed beta test was about to begin in Japan.Stay tuned for more Pokemon GO news as we get it!
