Cage was reportedly the subject of a civil forfeiture suit, and once presented with evidence that the skull had been wrongly obtained, agreed to surrender it to U.S. authorities so that it can be returned to the Mongolian government, from whom it was apparently stolen.
Cage reportedly bought the skull from a gallery in 2007 and didn’t learn until last summer that it might have been stolen. He hasn’t been accused of any wrongdoing.
The Chait Gallery from whom Cage purchased the skull, was also not accused of any wrongdoing, but was previously found to have trafficked in stolen artifacts from a Florida archaeologist who was convicted of smuggling dinosaur bones out of Mongolia in late 2012.
