Rooster Teeth, the studio where Oum served as director of animation, made the announcement earlier today. Oum succumbed to an extreme allergic reaction to a routine medical procedure, which put him in a coma his body never recovered from.
In the statement from Rooster Teeth, the studio expressed that they “were so proud to be a part of his life and we will miss him greatly.
“As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.”
Oum was a creator whose popularity began with fan videos, gaining notoriety from his Halo and Metroid mashup, Haloid. This led to jobs in game design with studios like Midway and Namco Bandai, before joining Rooster Teeth on the eighth season of Red vs. Blue. After three seasons, Oum departed Red vs. Blue to create RWBY, a combination of classic manga and anime tropes about school girls and monsters that became a huge success for Rooster Teeth.
Oum is survived by his wife, Sheena, and other family members. A GoFundMeย campaign to help cover Oum’s medical bills and support his family has already been launched.
