Simon Pegg is quite busy with the Star Trek franchise. He’s both co-writing the script and reprising his role as Scotty in Star Trek 3. Speaking from the 2015 Jameson Empire Awards, Pegg gave an update on where progress on the film is at this point.

“What we’re doing is, we have to start big with the outline, and we’ll get more and more specific as we go along,” Pegg says. “The important thing is to get stuff to production so that they can start building and designing, so we’re starting, as you would with a screenplay, with the bigger concepts. Then the last thing that will come will be sort of the meat of it, the dialogue. So yeah, we’ve got a story, and new characters, and it’s really exciting.”
Last week, a rumor broke concerning Idris Elba’s potential involvement with the franchise. Of course, he couldn’t say much.
“I heard Idris is connected with it,” Pegg said, “and I’m hopeful that will come off, because he’s fantastic.”
Star Trek 3 is scheduled for theatrical release on July 8, 2016.
