Most had assumed that the upcoming movie The Wolverine from director James Mangold was a prequel to the other X-Men movie. However, in a stunning announcement to Empire Magazine, Mangold has revealed that The Wolverine is not a prequel.Mangold said, “Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.”In the same issues of Empire Magazine, there is also a picture of Wolverine with his bone claws. There have also been rumors that Jean Grey, who is played by Famke Janssen, will have a cameo in The Wolverine. Since Jean Grey died at the end of X-Men: Last Stand, how would it be possible for her to appear if the film is not a prequel?Well, either the Jean Grey rumor is not true, or more than likely The Wolverine will feature a number of flashbacks, which would also explain the bone claws. For the most part, Mangold also indicates that the film will take place outside of all previous X-Men film continuity. Mangold said, “I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it.” Mangold plans to focus on the burden of immortality in The Wolverine film, and he felt that would be impossible to explore in a team type movie.
