The Guardians of the Galaxy are making a comeback! With Volume 2′ being filmed as we speak, and the recent announcement of Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff joining the cast, things are well underway for Marvel Studios’ most offbeat band of space pirates. The Guardians didn’t just have a rock solid story backing it up, it also had one of the best movie soundtracks in its “Volume One mixtape”. Aside from just being a conduit for some great action and comedy scenes, the mixtape also played a part in Starlord’s life, with Volume 2 being given to him as a parting gift from his dying mother at the beginning of the first film.

The songs themselves from the first movie were buried in our subconscious, as some of the best entries of the 70s. Volume 2 promises to have songs on the same level, bringing audiences once again back into the intergalactic adventures of Rocket Raccoon, his buddy Groot, and the rest of the gang. Here, we’ll give you a rundown of five songs we’d like to see in the sequel that are stalwarts of their time.

Starman By David Bowie

When David Bowie died recently, we lost a legend but he was able to leave the world a library of songs that can resonate with audiences for years to come. Mr. Bowie had a song in the first movie with “Moonage Daydream” and I think it would be fantastic to see him return to the franchise with a song that personifies outer space exploration. While “Space Oddity” would be a worthy entry as well, I think that Starman encapsulates the character of Peter Quill to a tee.

Staying Alive by The Beegees

There’s no song that better summarizes the 70s than Staying Alive, and I think more than any other song, this would be fantastic for the reintroduction of the Guardians to the audience, walking down a hallway similarly to how they did with “Cherry Bomb” blasting behind them.

Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Credence Clearwater

Credence Clearwater is amazing and they deserve a spot on the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel soundtrack without a doubt. I think “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” would be fantastic during a more somber moment of the film, while still fitting in as a worthwhile entry into the mixtape that is “Volume 2”.

Slow Ride By Foghat

Guardians of the Galaxy, in a way, almost seems reminiscent of travelling movies such as Cannonball Run, and Slow Ride would make for a great addition that stays true to that spirit. Another legendary song of the 70s, Foghat produced a fantastic tune that would fit in well with some intergalactic adventures.

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

To round things out, we have to go big or go home with arguably one of the greatest songs of all time. Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven would work so well as the final song of the movie and the crescendo to the Volume 2 Mixtape.
