Based on the famous French graphic novel series, the film follows two intergalactic agents (Dane DeHaan’s Valerian and Cara Delvingne’s Laureline) in the 28th Century as they investigate a plot to disrupt the peace and accord of the galaxy’s most diverse and peaceful city. All of that may be hard to discern from this trailer, as the sheer amount of alien species, extraordinary worlds, technology and sheer color is eye-stealing.
The designs of the film required the combined efforts of master effects houses Weta (Lord of the Rings) and ILM (Star Wars) – but beyond the great effects and unique visuals, the storyline and chemistry (or lack of) between the leads could be a hindrance. We saw some of the film while at New York Comic-Con 2016; from what we saw, it will be a uniquely Luc Besson-style fun ride.
