Veronica Mars Doubles Its Record-Breaking Kickstarter Goal and Keeps Going

With more than two weeks left before the end of its Kickstarter campaign, The Veronica Mars Movie crossed over the $4 million threshold yesterday and has raised more than another $100,000 since.Having raised $3 million the first day or so of fundraising, Veronica Mars was expected to quickly peter out, with many observers thinking that it would top out at roughly $5 million. It looks to be roughly on that pace; even though $120,000 in the last day sounds impressive, an infusion of new revenue has hit over the last couple of days as “rewards”–the goods and services that fans buy via Kickstarter–became available for the first time in a number of non-U.S. territories. The “petering out” has nothing to do with Mars, which has made almost five times what the next-closest film and video Kickstarter was able to raise, but with the fact that established properties have a pattern on Kickstarter that basically says most contributors–who will be fans of the artist or property that’s already established–will give either early or, if the project is in danger of not being funded, very late in the campaign. All of the project’s higher-end rewards (for contributions of $400 and up) have completely sold out.
