After 1980’s Superman II delighted audiences and critics alike everyone was eagerly-awaiting the next film in the series, but the positive vibe soon wore off once people got a gander of how awful Superman III is. Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane was demoted to a minor role for speaking out against the producers’ harsh treatment of Richard Donner, the original director of the previous two Superman films. Hackman chose not to return because of how Donner was treated, and he was replaced with a Lex Luthor knockoff: Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn).
