The Star Trek franchise was successfully reborn under the stewardship of J.J. Abrams with the first two installments, though many felt that the third entry, Star Trek Beyond, felt truest to the original series. Unfortunately, that didn’t result in solid box office turnout.

Despite the less than stellar box office tally, Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Uhura) would love to see the franchise continue. As for her character, she is up for reprising the role well into her later years, something she discussed in a recent interview with IGN.
“I hope there is. I really hope there is. It’d be crazy to limit the longevity of a show that has had a 50-year life and on, to stop because they had a bad box office turnout, so, especially when people were talking about how like amazing this one was, I would love, I would always come back. To get an opportunity to be with all my friends until we’re 56 or 60, I would be so happy (laughs).”
Star Trek Beyond received plenty of positive buzz and was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. For some reason that didn’t translate to box office dollars, as the $185 budgeted Beyond only pulled in over $158 million domestically. It was still profitable mind you, as it successfully brought in over $343 million worldwide, but that was certainly a step back from Star Trek: Into Darkness, which had a worldwide total of over $467 million, $228 of that domestic.
There are already rumors that Star Trek 4 is in development, so Saldana might just get her wish for another chance at the role.
You can view the official synopsis for Star Trek Beyond below.
After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from a possible galactic war.
