Avengers Traitor Revealed In Secret Empire #5

The old adage states it’s always darkest before the dawn, and it seems like Marvel Comics latest event is testing the limits of that phrase as Steve Rogers’ not-so-Secret Empire takes control of the United States.

Though they suffered a minor loss when Hank Pym/Ultron decided to gift the resistance with a shard of the Cosmic Cube — the MacGuffin du jour that both sides are looking to assemble — the former Captain Americahad an ace up his sleeve in the form of a mole.

The final page of issue #4 showed a cast of characters, one of whom the mole could be including: Hercules, Ant-Man, Iron Man, Mockingbird, Quicksilver, and Sam Wilson.

When those heroes return to their base of operations at the Mount, they are ambushed by the tentacled Hydra helicarriers and Steve Rogers. But the attack is precipitated by the go-ahead signal given by the mole, who turns out to be none other than…

Now, it’s not entirely shocking, considering the former SHIELD agent turned A.I.M. scientist Skrull turned once again SHIELD agent tends to betray her allies before getting back into their good graces. We wouldn’t be surprised to learn if this is long con in the overall story. Especially considering writer Nick Spencer made readers question her true loyalties when he “revealed” her allegiance to Advanced Idea Mechanics in the pages of Secret Avengers.

Still, the revelation is sure to shock the surviving members of the resistance. But that might only be temporary, as they still have to deal with the looming threat of a once-dead friend that just might be a foe…
