The Avengers have taken on a good number of powerful villains over the years. Readers have seen a large roster of bad guys appear in the comic books that the team had to gather together to take on, with some even requiring assistance from the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. In order to be considered an Avengers-level threat, a villain must prove to be strong enough to take on characters such as Iron Man or Captain America alone, and require a whole team of heroes to come together and there are plenty. But the danger doesn’t stop there.

There have been villains that are beyond the threat level of other bad guys that either came really close to beating the Avengers or have tackled Earth’s mightiest heroes. There are some villains whose powers make them nearly unbeatable and some adversaries are a little too powerful for their own good. And some of them, despite being defeated or even killed, have come back multiple times to face Marvel’s greatest characters. These sorts of villains can be considered a little too threatening as they show off abilities that could easily one-shot a good number of the Avengers on their own. They are just too powerful to live, especially since they are never truly defeated.
7) Chthon

Chthon first appeared in Avengers #186 and is one of the Elder Gods. He created Chaos Magic, the most powerful form of magic, and is responsible for making demonic races such as werewolves and vampires. Chthon is one of those villains who keeps coming back after being defeated (and he has been, multiple times), showing that he is a constant threat to the Avengers. He can be considered to be one of the greatest magic users in the Marvel universe and is a villain that cannot be taken lightly. His power is immense, making him a huge threat,.
6) Hela

Hela is an Asgardian goddess who works as an adversary for Thor and has also caused trouble for the Avengers. Numerous Marvel events have happened over the years that show Hela’s power and how much of a threat she is. She has caused a good amount of chaos and keeps coming back after being defeated by teams such as both the X-Men and the Avengers. If there is one thing that Hela has proven, it is that she cannot be taken lightly and is a great evil that always has a shadow over the Marvel universe.
5) Mephisto

Mephisto is essentially Marvel’s devil. He has proven his power since his introduction in Silver Surfer #3 in the Silver Age of comics and has committed a large number of evil acts during his tenure as a villain. Perhaps the most notorious of these acts is taking away the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, but he’s done other dark deeds as weel, including capturing the soul of Cynthia Von Doom, the mother of Doctor Doom. He has proven to be trouble for many of the Avengers and is a villain that could easily be an immense threat to the team if he chose to be. Given his power, he’s not easily defeated, which makes things even worse.
4) The Beyonder

The Beyonder is an omnipotent being that has shown to be a powerful adversary for the Avengers. He was a huge part of both of the Secret Wars events, proving to be a cosmic level threat that is dangerous to more than just the Avengers. The Beyonder is known for kidnapping characters and putting them on the Battleworld, a world that he created for the purpose of watching heroes and villains fight each other. He is a character that is more than enough for the Avengers and can be a severe threat to the entire Marvel Universe.
3) Kang

Kang the Conquerer is a ruthless villain who discovered interdimensional travel and has taken over a large number of multiverses. He has an intellect that surpasses many other characters found in the Marvel universe and has a suit of armor made from materials that are found far in the future. What makes Kang so deadly is the fact that he will keep coming back due to there being a large number of his variants that can constantly take his place. Kang is a threat that will never see an end and one that could one day be the end of the Avengers.
2) Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom may not have the insane power of some of the others on this list, but he has proven to be not just a threat to the Avengers but to the Marvel universe as a whole. Whenever something happens in the comic books, Doctor Doom has his hands in it somehow. He wears an incredibly powerful suit of armor and has the ability to use powerful magic that even the Sorcerer Supreme knows little about. Doctor Doom has one of the greatest minds that can be found in Marvel comics, and has shown since his introduction in Fantastic Four #5 that he has power beyond that of most of the Avengers. Even if Doctor Doom is defeated, he always manages to return to create even more problems for the heroes.
1) Ultron

Ultron has proven to be one the greatest threats to the Avengers. Whenever he decides to cause trouble it is an event that leaves the fate of the world hanging on a string. Ultron has even defeated the Avengers in alternate worlds, showing that he is capable of defeating the team and bringing the world to its knees. His immense hatred for not just the Avengers, but for humanity as a whole is the right amount of fuel that a villain needs to keep coming back stronger every time. Ultron is one of those bad guys that can defeat the heroes and has shown that he just might be a little too powerful.
