Absolute Superman Is One Step Away From Becoming a Killer

The Absolute Universe is built around the idea of putting heroes on the back foot, and forcing them to fight harder than ever to save the day. Every hero has been put through the ringer, but none have had their identity and soul challenged like Absolute Superman. Instead of being raised by the loving Kents of Earth, Superman grew up on Krypton and watched it crumble apart due to the selfishness of the elites. Ever since landing on Earth, heโ€™s been hounded by Lazarus Corp and people demanding he burn everything down, and after running for years, heโ€™s finally been captured, and theyโ€™re trying to turn him into a monster.

Superman hasnโ€™t just been fighting to save peopleโ€™s lives, heโ€™s been fighting to be a hero in a world that desperately wants him to be a monster. Everywhere he turns, people are telling him what he has to do and what he has to become, almost no one actually caring for who he is and what he wants. Heโ€™s been infected by rage and hate, and has desperately clung to his morals. Now, at the edge of his emotional and spiritual rope, Superman fights to remain himself. As everyone prepares for the battle of Kansas, Superman doesnโ€™t just fight for lives, heโ€™s fighting a microcosm of the battle for the soul of the Absolute Universe, and he doesnโ€™t even know it.

Superman Pushed to the Edge

After years of watching his new world kill itself, Superman was captured and tortured by the deranged Brainiac. He put the last Kryptonian through thousands upon thousands of simulations, encouraging him to slaughter his enemies to desensitize him and turn him into a murderer. Superman mentally killed the Science Council of Krypton alongside countless Peacemakers, but no matter how far he was pushed, he refused to kill Brainiac or any innocents. Even while being tortured, he kept whispering to the Brainiac clones that the main one treated them like refuse, inspiring them to try and revolt, even if it ended in failure. Supermanโ€™s resolve couldnโ€™t be broken, but even he has limits. When Lois, Jimmy, and Sam Lane attempted to free him, Superman lived through another vision of the Kents telling him to murder everyone. He finally woke up, then tightened his grip around the smiling villainโ€™s throat and used Sol to rip the building apart.

The Importance of Supermanโ€™s Spirit

Superman is at his every limit, and heโ€™s one moment from slaughtering everyone and becoming the monster the al Ghuls want him to be, and the one Darkseid needs. Supermanโ€™s goodness isnโ€™t just important for saving the lives of the people around him, itโ€™s essential to the core of the DC Universe. Supermanโ€™s hopeful energy is the basis from which every world in the DC Multiverse is built, except the Absolute one. Darkseid transformed this universe to generate Omega Energy from negativity and grow strong enough to destroy the Prime Universe, and what better way to destroy hope than corrupting the very embodiment of hope itself? Darkseid has obviously taken a special interest in Absolute Superman, gifting the al Ghuls with the Father Box, which spoke to Superman about him becoming a monster.

Itโ€™s likely that Superman wonโ€™t kill anyone next issue, and his refusal will kick off the Battle for Kansas to destroy what remains of Supermanโ€™s spirit. Superman will have to win this battle, but also win it in the right way. If he gives into his negative emotions and starts killing his enemies, something the Prime Superman would never do, then Darkseid wins. He will crush the hope of the entire universe into nothing, then use that power to let him take over the Prime Universe and turn the Legion of Super-Heroes into his willing slaves, destroying the future every hero has ever fought for. Superman has to fight, he has to win, but he canโ€™t do that if it means crossing a line. The Man of Tomorrow has to show the Absolute Universe that being a hero, being Superman, means finding a better way. If there isnโ€™t one, then he makes one, and he saves everybody, but he canโ€™t do it alone. His memories and heart have been corrupted, but he has Jimmy and Lois, and they were inspired by his kindness. They have to save Superman, so he can save everyone.
