Since the end of the last Justice League Dark back in 2020, fans have been waiting patiently for the return of the titular team. With fan favorites like Zatanna, John Constantine, Deadman, Dr. Fate, and Wonder Woman of all characters, the team has a strong following who is eager to see them take on more mystical and supernatural threats. But fans are also hopeful that should Justice League Dark make a comeback, the team will have some new faces as well. Taking down the dark magic threats one ragtag group of heroes at a time, that’s what the Justice League Dark does best, after all, and DC has plenty of characters who would be perfect to lend a hand.

Here are ten characters who should be a part of the next lineup of the Justice League Dark. Some of these picks have been on the team previously (albeit briefly in some cases) but they added a nice flavor and we’d love to see them back, while others are new faces we think would make a good bit. Whether we will even get another iteration of the team is another matter entirely, but we can dream can’t we?
1) Animal Man

While a brief member previously, Animal Man is too cool not to rejoin the team. If we have Swamp Thing as the representative of the Green, we should have Animal Man for the Red. No stranger to mystical problems thrown his way, Buddy has enough of a weird history along with Constantine and Swamp Thing to fit in. While Animal Man has never been the most popular, just seeing him again could be something interesting just the same. He’s also a character we’ve seen a bit more of on the pages of DC comics recently as it is, so getting him on a proper team would be a great way to expand the character’s reach. He would also just be a good asset to the team: having the animal kingdom at his disposal could come in hand to many magical attacks.
2) Swamp Thing (Levi)

Speaking of Swamp Thing, Levi Kamei is still relatively recent to the mantle of Swamp Thing but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a good addition to the team. With Levi not really being utilized too much in DC just yet despite having the Swamp Thing mantle, putting him on any team would do him some justice and give him a chance to shine. He feels like a great character waiting to have his big moment. Plus seeing him with a different dynamic with John Constantine could be fun.
As much as a lot of us miss Alec, it’s honestly time for us to embrace Levi. Sometimes the changes are needed and making him a starting point on the Justice League Dark would be perfect to see for him.
3) The Sandman (Wesley Dodds)

More of a golden age Justice Society guy, newer fans met Dodds in Knight Terrors and his recent mini. A lot of fans don’t think of him first as the Sandman, however, so getting him on Justice League Dark might be a way to really explore him as a character. He is a fascinating one, after all. As a man who makes a sleeping gas and deals with early noir crimes, he’s a character that is easy to get hooked on.
While he returned from the dead in Knight Terrors and was put back to sleep, it wouldn’t be hard to bring him back again. And with Dodds lways feeling a bit mystical as a whole, this semi-living state he exists in would make him the perfect character to walk the line between our world and the world of the dead. Maybe even moreso than Deadman.
4) Zauriel

The “I can’t believe it’s not Hawkman” character, aka Zauriel, was another brief member of the team that would have a perfect place on a new iteration of the Justice League Dark. A literal angel that was actually believed to have been Hawkman (hey, the comparison exists for a reason) at one time would fit on the supernatural team so well. His powers are also pretty complex and interesting, including his immense knowledge of both magic and religion, so he’d be a great asset as well.
As for team dynamics, conversations with him and Deadman could be interesting given their different faiths, throw in Constantine and you could the conversation of a lifetime. A key thing with this team would be that overall dynamic since adding Zauriel would make things pretty specific, but it could net some fascinating stories.
5) The Bride

A bit on the nose given the Creature Commandos show, The Bride would be fun to see as a member of the Justice League Dark. While Frankenstein has been a member before, swapping him for the Bride could be super fun. Acting as another character who walks the line between the living and the dead, she’d fit right in with this team. Plus seeing a character who is so iconic (she is a take on The Bride of Frankenstein after all) with the always iconic Wonder Woman would be insanely cool. Two of the best representations of female characters in comics crossing over would be a dream come true for fans.
6) G.I. Robot

Speaking of synergy with Creature Commandos, we gotta have G.I. Robot. Adding someone with a keen sense for hunting enemies (even if some of his hunting is very specific) would fit so well on the Justice League Dark. Plus, with the Creature Commandos series introducing the character to a lot of new fans, it would just be great to see him have a comics adventure again.
There’s also the bonus that he could be pretty versatile despite not having any mystical powers. Another angle you can take with him would be to make him the team medic. Giving him a similar role to that of the X-Men’s Forge could be a fun way to integrate this beloved robot to the super team.
7) The Spectre

Would the personification of God’s wrath be way too overpowered for the Justice League Dark? Yes, but it would be the coolest thing to see. Making him the character who could get major conflicts handled as well as finding the more supernatural sources behind threats would be so cool. Honestly he even has the makings of a leader of the team. Whether it would be Jim Corrigan or Crispis would be anyone’s guess (we’d take either, honestly) but anytime we get more the Spectre it’s not a bad thing at all. He just feels like a good fit and we’re honestly surprised we haven’t really seen this.
8) Doctor Mid-Nite

With his successor on the current JSA lineup the original Doctor Mid-Nite could do wonders here. Having a scientist on the team that could adapt to the supernatural threats would be cool to see on this team. Charles is at the moment mostly relegated to background cameos, but this could be a boost for him big time and as a classic character, he more than deserves it. The big thing, however, would be bringing the scientific element to this largely mystical team and it would be a great way of grounding things out as well as exploring the intersection between man and magic.
9) Flatline

One of the recent new oddballs in DC, Flatline has a unique powerset that could help the Justice League Dark. The former sidekick of Lord Death-Man and love interest of sorts for Damian Wayne, Nika’s abilities to absorb powers from the dead could make her a lethal fighter on the team. Along with her incredible martial arts abilities, she’d be a great hero if she gave it a chance.
She might have a bit of a tough time winning over the rest of the team given her history, but I’m sure having Robin vouch for her would give her an in. She’s shown her ability of wanting to break good along with Robin’s help it would be perfect. And after all, the Justice League Dark is a team of ragtag heroes. Not everyone there has a sterling reputuation as it is.
10) Robin (Damian Wayne)

Speaking of Damian, putting him on here would be perfect. As the more mystical member of the Bat-family, making him the straight up magic one would be perfect. You could have him learn more spells from Constantine and he could keep his gray suit with the Justice League Dark missions, too. Really, we just want Damian to keep that costume. It’s perfect.
While he’s walking the line on wanting to stay on as Robin, teaming him with characters that aren’t his dad would be a good way for him to explore his own place as a hero, which is something we really need to see for him. And if Flatline was part of the team, they could honestly have a fun romance subplot. Just as long as he’s learning spells from John and not advice in dating he’ll be fine.
