Marvel’s Perfect ‘World’s Finest’ Duo Already Exists (and It’s Not Iron Man & Cap)

No matter who you ask, DC’s World’s Finest is possibly the best team-up in all of comics. Superman and Batman (and occasionally Robin) are the iconic figures of DC Comics, setting a strong example of what a power pairing can be. It’s something that no one else has really replicated; sure, Marvel has some good team-ups, but they haven’t really created their own World’s Finest. But it’s high time they did. However, defining what Marvel’s version of a World’s Finest team should be is a lot more complicated than just putting two powerful and popular characters together. While DC fans are a lot more defined about who their top heroes are, Marvel’s rankings are different, depending on which type of fan you ask. And if you compare the characters in the comics to their MCU versions, it’s a wildly different subject.

For Marvel’s 616 universe, the answer is pretty simple, but it could get lost behind other interpretations of Marvel. The MCU and the original Ultimate Universe might suggest Iron Man and Captain America are the two leads, but that may not translate very well to the pages of 616 comics. While they’re insanely popular now, they were never on top of their pop-culture game until the films. So, what would be the comic version of Marvel’s World’s Finest?

The Marvel Mount Rushmore Holds the Key

While we can look at Captain America and say he’s one of the biggest Marvel characters, Iron Man doesn’t have the same comic legacy. If you ask the average Marvel comics fan, the Mount Rushmore of Marvel Comics can be broken down to their most recognizable characters. The four most likely to make the list? Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Wolverine. You have every major corner of Marvel here. Of the four, Captain America might be the least notable overall on the list. Subtract him from the mix, and it’s The Hulk, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. As iconic as the Hulk is, though, he doesn’t reach the height of popularity like the other two.

That leaves us with our two defined characters as the World’s Finest being Spider-Man and Wolverine, and it makes a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. Spider-Man has long been the big seller for Marvel, and Wolverine has become the icon of the X-Men. But that begs the question: if they are the two most iconic characters in Marvel, do they deserve the title, and do their team-ups make sense?

Spider-Man & Wolverine Are Already Marvel’s World’s Finest, Just Not In Name

With a new co-headlining series to their names, Spider-Man and Wolverine have functionally already earned their place as Marvel’s version of World’s Finest. The two have a long history of crossing over with each other and working so well off of each other. With Spider-Man being the loveable one, and Wolverine bringing the grit needed to balance them out, it’s a no-brainer that it’s these two that are the premier Marvel team-up.

The new series looks like the start of a legendary comic run. With DC being successful with their current World’s Finest series, Spider-Man & Wolverine has the potential to function the same way for Marvel. It remains to be seen how the series will sell, but Spider-Man & Wolverine is one of the more exciting Marvel team-ups in a long time.
