A Surprising Hero May Hold the Key to Defeating Darkseid

Superman has become one of the epicenters of the DC Multiverse. Part of this is, of course, because of 2025’s Superman, which has made Superman even more popular than ever. DC Comics is in the middle of the next big story, which has its origins in 2024’s DC All-In #1. This story revolved around Darkseid, having sacrificed his servants and with the purloined power of the Spectre, attacking the Justice League Watchtower. The Justice League was able to stop him, but his defeat opened a rift in space-time. This led to the Justice League’s premiere time traveler Booster Gold jumping into action. However, Booster Gold found himself under attack by a new Legion of Superheroes, under the command of Darkseid. Gold has finally made his return in Superman #29, and he may be the most important character in the DC Multiverse.

Darkseid’s plan to take over the DC Multiverse has mostly involved the Absolute DC Universe, but Superman #29 shows that it’s more than that. The Darkseid Legion has been fighting the Legion War in the future, fighting the four multiversal versions of the Legion of Superheroes. Superman #29 shows that Booster Gold has been fighting in that war for two years, as Superman is finally able to save him. However, Superman doesn’t remember Booster Gold at all; for some reason he has been removed from time. This is a very interesting turn of events, and shows that Booster Gold, a character that most people think is a joke, may be the key to defeating Darkseid.

Booster Gold Is a Greater Hero Than Anyone Imagines

Booster Gold came to prominence in the classic Justice League International, but he first appeared in his own miniseries before joining the team. Michael Carter was an athlete from the 25th century. It was found out that he was helping fix games so that he could make money off gambling and lost his job. He became a night guard at a museum, and decided that he wanted more out of life. So, he stole a Legion flight ring and a suit or armor that gave him super strength and energy weapons, stole a Time Sphere, and went to the past with the robot Skeets. Since then, Gold has been trying his best to make himself one of the most popular heroes in history, which led to him joining multiple Justice League teams. Booster Gold is often looked as a joke; he’s more concerned with his own popularity than he is with actually saving the day. However, that’s not exactly true. Booster Gold has become the kind of hero he long pretended to be, and does care. The best example of this is friendship with Ted Kord, Blue Beetle II. The two of them got along well, and Kord showed the depth of feeling that Booster Gold could have for other people. Booster Gold wants to be popular, but he also wants to save the world. Eventually, Booster Gold proved that he didn’t need the Justice League to save the world.

After Infinite Crisis, Booster Gold thought he’d be made a member of the new Justice League. However, time was changed, and a new Justice League team wasn’t founded. Booster Gold investigated why things had changed, and that led him into a rather complicated mission that saw him help midwife the birth of the new multiverse, ending up saving all of time from Shazam villain Mr. Mind, who went from a worm to a universe-eating butterfly monster. Booster Gold did all of this behind the scenes; in fact, part of his plan was about destroying his public image. Gold sacrificed his public image in order to save everything. This started a new phase in Booster Gold’s career, as he worked with Rip Hunter, one of DC’s most important time travelers, saving time and space multiple times. Booster has reached a whole new level as a hero, and Superman #29 shows that. When Superman finds him, he tells Superman that he had fought the Darkseid Legion for two years completely on his own. The Darkseid Legion is superlatively powerful; their members have basically every power you can think of. For Booster Gold to be able to fight them off by himself for two years shows just how formidable he is. However, the real intriguing thing is that no one remembers him. Somehow, Booster Gold’s existence has been erased from history and there’s really only one reason for that to happen โ€” Darkseid knows that Booster Gold is important to stopping his plans.

Superman is able to free Booster Gold, but the Darkseid Legion is on the two of them like white on rice. They’re able to overpower the heroes, and Superman #29 ends with a big cliffhanger (which I won’t spoil here). Before the attack by the villains, Booster Gold questions why Superman came to save him and tells him that it’s pointless anyway; they’ve already lost. However, I don’t think that to be the case and it’s all because of Booster Gold.

Booster Gold entered the Omega Rift, which was caused by the defeat of Darkseid in DC All-In #1. This wouldn’t be the last time we saw the Omega Rift; Gorilla Grodd tried to take it and gain the power of Darkseid, which the Rift contains, in Justice League Unlimited‘s “We Are Yesterday”. Booster Gold was the first person to enter the Rift, which may have done one of two things โ€” give Booster powers that he hasn’t had before or taken him out of time so that Darkseid and the Darkseid Legion can’t detect him. Booster Gold may be the person the heroes need to defeat Darkseid because he’s able to move unseen through time. Booster Gold has often saved creation, and he may be the one thing Darkseid fears.
