Years after having his Wonder Woman script rejected, could Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon finally be heading to the DC Universe?

That Hashtag Show, the webseries that recently broke the casting for Marvel’s Iron Fist series on Netflix, are reporting that the man who brought fans Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its wildly popular musical episode “Once More, With Feeling,” will helm the two-part, musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash on The CW in the spring of 2017.

With Glee and Broadway veterans like Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist, Victor Garber and Jesse L. Martin in The CW’s DC Universe, there has long been speculation that one of more of the shows might one day have a musical episode.
If true, Whedon would be the highest-profile crossover between DC and Marvel since The Dark Knight and Iron Man revolutionized comic book movies nearly a decade ago and made them a twice-or-more-a-year box office phenomenon. Ironically, while his Wonder Woman never got off the ground, current Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins nearly directed Thor: The Dark World before bowing out due to creative differences with Marvel. There have been a number of actors, musicians, and crew members to transverse the comics universes, but big-name talent like lead actors and directors have generally stayed in one place. Whedon, Marvel’s former cinematic “showrunner,” bowed out after Avengers: Age of Ultron and has stayed fairly low key since.
The crossover, announced yesterday, will take place in the thirteenth episodes of each series, which will likely air in February. Both Supergirl and The Flash return to The CW in October, airing new episodes on Monday and Tuesday respectively at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
