Wonder Woman Producer Reveals The One Trait That Everyone Agreed On

Most superhero origin stories begin with some tragic event, such as a death of a family member or a significant other, that puts them onto the hero’s journey. And for the darker tales, the antihero is often fueled by revenge, a need to kill whoever has wronged them. Additionally, a good number of protagonists are reluctant heroes, wishing they could give back their powers and go out of the responsibilities of being a hero in order to become “normal” once again.

However, Wonder Woman isn’t that sort of tale. Taking inspiration from her comics and Richard Donner‘s Superman: The Movie (1978), director Patty Jenkins wanted Wonder Woman to be about a hero that embraces her role and abilities and purely wants to do what’s best for mankind.

“The thing that I think that [Christopher Reeve’s] Superman had that our Wonder Woman has is the genuine compassion for man,” producer Charles Roven told Collider. “Wanting to see the best in him, and wanting to help mankind, men and women, human beings. But what the character also had in every incarnation was her desire from the time that she was a young girl to be a hero. Her mother was a hero, her aunt was a hero, and she felt it was the destiny of herself and the other Amazons to be heroic, and so she wanted to fulfill that destiny from the very beginning, from the time that she was a little girl. That was always there, how she was gonna go about doing it wasn’t always there.”

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gal Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Patty Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, Wonder Woman.

The film will be released on June 2, 2017.
