Patty Jenkins Hated Cutting So Much From ‘Wonder Woman’

It’s hard to imagine that Patty Jenkins has any regrets about Wonder Woman. The DC film hit theaters this summer and is still breaking box-office records. However, the director did admit recently there’s one thing she wished she could have changed.

Jenkins spoke with fans recently during an event at SoHo’s Apple Store in New York City (via The Mary Sue). When the director was asked if she wanted to change anything about Wonder Woman‘s final cut, she had this to say:

“If I had my druthers, the movie would be longer with little tiny jokes and moments that were hard to lose. Particularly because the great thing about these actors is you have such talented funny capable people, so that was already great material for them to work from and then they all just like every mess around would be delightful. So it’s really hard to cut a movie like that down, and so just that sort of stuff, [the] details.”

Of course, Wonder Woman did have to align itself with some sort of time limit. The DC Extended Universe has had issues keeping previous films succinct, and it looks like Jenkins was determined her standalone wouldn’t drone on. The director might have had more content she wanted to script, but Wonder Woman had a specific trajectory mapped out already in Jenkin’s head. So, by the time filming came to, she was able to keep her reels to the point.

In fact, Jenkins has said before that Wonder Woman‘s crew did not waste time filming anything that wasn’t totally necessary. The director told Collider, “I think what you learn is rhythm, tone, humor where the jokes are happening but in our case, I just now can finally say all this. We didn’t cut one scene in this movie nor did we change the order of one scene in this movie from the script that we went in shooting with.”

When you get your hands on Wonder Woman, don’t expect there to be a slew of deleted scenes. There is just a lone piece of cut footage housed within the film’s bonus features, and it is simply an excised bit of Wonder Woman’s chat with Steve Trevor on a boat. Jenkins was determined to make her film’s production as efficient as possible, and it is clear she succeeded.

Still, Wonder Woman fans would not say no to the film’s sequel having a longer screen-time to house more jokes. No one would complain about that.
