The world of comics is often used as an outlet to express political themes, and a new piece from ‘Batman: The Black Mirror’ artists Francesco Francavilla is no exception.

Francesco Francavilla, who is also known for his work on The Black Beetle and Zorro, recently shared a drawing of Batman “taking a knee”. The action is in reference to a movement started by Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during a performance of the National Anthem during an NFL game. You can check out the illustration below.

Kaepernick’s use of the gesture began in 2016, as a way to silently protest acts of racial injustice and police brutality. The statement sparked a mixture of support and outcry from the public, culminating in President Donald Trump suggesting that the protesting players should be fired for their actions earlier this week.
In response, players from all across the NFL – as well as other sports organizations – have since joined in on the protest, causing the “Take The Knee” movement to gain more and more attention. And some, including Francavilla, think it’s a movement worthy of some of DC’s biggest heroes.
