Director Zack Snyder's latest film is considered the culmination of all his work in the DC cinematic universe thus far, uniting the heroes in Justice League. But ever since he stepped away from the project in the wake of a family tragedy, fans have wondered about the circumstances that brought Joss Whedon aboard.

Recently Batman actor Ben Affleck shed some light on the situation during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, revealing how Whedon came to take over directing duties on the film.

"Zack sought out Joss," Affleck said, "And wanted him to be the guy to finish the movie when he wasn't able to. They definitely worked together to do something kind of special."

Producer Charles Roven said that Whedon was already involved with Justice League before taking over the reshoots, in addition to working on making his new Batgirl film.

"Zack decided that he wanted to do some additional photography … He thought that Joss' sensibility might be exactly right for what he was looking to do," said Roven. "So he showed Joss the film, and he talked about a number of scenes that we would be adding or expanding upon, and Joss wrote those scenes."

Snyder and Whedon both have very different sensibilities when it comes to superhero movies — just watch Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Marvel's The Avengers to see for yourself. So how could those two styles mesh to make one epic film?

"I think they were very complementary," Affleck said. "Zack's so good with the mythic, gothic, heavy serious stuff, and Joss is so good with tone, and comedy, and making superheroes seem kind of real and relatable."

For those wondering what exactly Whedon added to the film with his reshoots, Affleck provided a few details specifically for Batman. He said that the new footage play to "the dynamics, the sexual tension with Wonder Woman, the regular old tension with Flash." When asked about Aquaman, Affleck admitted "You can't be around Jason Momoa and not have sexual tension."

A love triangle between Wonder Woman and Aquaman with Batman caught in the middle? While we're not expecting to see that on screen, call us intrigued at the prospect.

Justice League premieres in theaters November 17th.
