7. Deadpool
Coming in at #7 is Deadpool, the dark horse underdog that overcame development limbo and turned its foul-mouthed, violent protagonist (played by box office jinx like Ryan Reynolds, no less) into a box office champion and mainstream anti-hero icon.
...Of course the film has a thin niche; there are plenty of people (your parents? grandparents?) who will never "get" nor get down with a character like Deadpool, which limits the heights he can climb. No shame in that, though: More Deadpool 2 for the rest of us to enjoy!
6. The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan transformed the comic book movie genre, almost single-handedly pushing it to a new level of legitimacy with his Dark Knight Trilogy.
After the unprecedented billion-dollar success of The Dark Knight, fans all over the world (both hardcore and mainstream) were chomping at the bit to see Nolan's trilogy capper, The Dark Knight Rises. Featuring Tom Hardy's Bane and a new version of Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), TDKR was supposed to be Nolan's finest work yet - a modern opus that was going to blow viewers' collective socks off and maybe even walk away with an Oscar or two. But all we got was a pretty good movie that sometimes featured Batman...
Still, it's a testament Nolan's talent and vision that his disappointing conclusion still ranks high on our users' lists of the best ever.
5. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment all decided to follow a risky new vision of Superman (Man of Steel) by doubling-down and pitting that risky new version of Superman against a risky new version of Batman, played an even riskier choice in actor (Ben Affleck). In the end, what we got was the risky vision of a movie that struck a deep chord of either love or hate with most viewers.
...And yet, for those who think that the DCEU is dead, it's interesting to note that even in the short time it's been released, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has amassed enough support to make it #5 on our list.
4. Batman Begins
Not surprisingly, Nolan's first Batman films falls on the spectrum of being better than the third film, but probably not as good as The Dark Knight (which, SPOILER, is probably in the Top 3).
Batman Begins was not only a solid beginning to the phenomenon that was The Dark Knight Trilogy - it's arguably the pivotal film that turned around the entire comic book movie industry. With his non-linear storytelling and crazy lineup of acting talent (and also Katie Holmes), Nolan proved that these stories and heroes could be conduits for serious drama and cinematic storytelling, instead of just being pulpy action cartoons come to life.
3. Suicide Squad
No doubt the trolls will feast on this one - but yes, Suicide Squad is in our top 3 user picks for their #7FavFilms.
Was it the anticipation? The early swell of passionate fans who want to support their DCEU anit-hero film and reverse the negative hype? We can't tell you why people rate things the way they do - we just read the stats like everyone else. And Suicide Squad was rated this high.
Look, don't argue... vote. Below is our database for Suicide Squad. So, if you're so inclined, you have the power to bring that score down to a level you deem more fitting. Have at it!
2. Captain America: Civil War
Coming in at #2 is arguably the greatest Marvel movie yet: Captain America: Civil War.
Not only does this threequel cement Captain America as the greatest franchise in the MCU (Tony Stark ain't the only billion-dollar earner anymore!), it also does no less than:
- Pay off half a dozen great film/TV arcs playing out over the last eight years.
- Introduce and quickly develop great new MCU heroes (Spidey and Black Panther).
- Deliver the biggest and most epic superhero battle yet.
- Gives us a central conflict that is wonderfully personal and well-balanced - and then, actually makes it the central focus of the story (crazy!).
Oh and #5: Civil War managed to set up one hell of an exciting MCU Phase 3 to come. Marvel Studios has never been better - as fans have noticed.
1. The Dark Knight
Are you surprised? You had to figure that when Civil War was #2, there was only one spot left to get this into place...
What's there to say about The Dark Knight that hasn't been said? It's an iconic piece of cinema that now belongs to history for so many valid and important reasons. And even though time threatens to march on and make the cinematic wonders of our past more and more obsolete with every new year (especially if Ben Affleck's Batman solo movie is everything it can be), for right now, The Dark Knight still reigns as king - at least with our esteemed readers.
