Willem Dafoe is known by movie buffs worldwide, but comic fans will know the actor for two specific roles. The actor double-dipped into Hollywood’s superhero machine as he’s lent his talents to both DC and Marvel. And, now, the actor is opening up his thoughts about the cinematic universes.

Dafoe sat down with Collider to talk about his upcoming films, and it was there the actor was asked about his ventures with Marvel and DC. The Spider-Man and Aquaman actor told the site he doesn’t like to ‘see’ the studios’ universes and prefers to approach movies one step at a time.
“I don’t see the universes. Of course, there are differences, but it’s project by project. I haven’t wrapped my brain around the difference. From the outside, maybe that’s interesting, but I’m dealing with a specific character and director,” Dafoe said.
“I’m not thinking so much about the selling, the business, the corporate stuff or the franchise stuff. I am very weak in thinking about those things. In some ways, I’m like a child. I only look for interesting things to do and interesting people to play with.”
Dafoe got his superhero start awhile back thanks to Sam Raimi. The director cast the actor to play Norman Osborn in his Spider-Man film back in 2002, and Dafoe was praised for his take on the villain. Raimi’s franchise went to span across three films before Sony Pictures invested in a reboot, so Dafoe’s exposure to the DC Extended Universe was a wake-up call.
After all, the DCEU is a far more complicated place than Raimi’s Spider-Man universe. The up-and-coming franchise has three films to its name already with a fourth coming in November thanks to Justice League. Dafoe’s role in Aquaman may end up being an isolated piece of the DCEU, but the actor’s character and their actions could very well affect other areas of the franchise moving forward.
